With berths for nearly 600 craft, the Mercia Marina near Derby will be one of the most prestigious pleasure craft developments in the country.
Engineers Bettridge Turner & Partners chose a Matière CM4 precast concrete arch structure for the entrance to the development. The 27.5m long ‘green’ bridge/tunnel will take vessels on a new canal link from the Trent and Mersey canal under the re-aligned access road to the site.
The CM4 25m2 x 40m2 structure with a span of 4.78m was carefully selected to give the required clearance over the canal and tow path whilst keeping the finished road level as low as possible.
The Matière CM4 arch profile closely replicates the traditional brick arch bridge shape frequently found on the UK’s canal network so compliments the traditional canal architecture. By using a raked spandrel wall and recess roof unit at each end of the tunnel, the portal will follow the earth works line without the need for intrusive headwalls.
The structure was erected in just 2 days, well in time for the Marina’s planned opening in September 2008.

BACK TO NEWSThe new intersection Stupava was opened to public on the first of August 2011. It is the crossing of the old D2 with the new constructed D4.
The rail bridge RB01, which carries the rail line over a local farm road, is in close proximity of the main structure on this section, the bridge across the Maritca river. The bridge RB01 is replacing an old existing bridge at the end of its lifecycle which was confirmed by several borehole drills samples tested in a laboratory.
continueThe road bridge carries over a 2nd class road over a double rail electrified track. The existing bridge structure was a three span bridge of precast pre-stressed beams of the length 30m sitting on in-situ columns.
