ABM Bridge Systems has successfully installed the final of its underpass structures on the A3 Hindhead Bypass project.

The four Matière Opti Cadre portal structures designed, manufactured and erected by ABM for main contractor Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering  have been installed between October 2007 and February 2009 with each one taking  between three and five days to complete.

The first two structures, Hindhead Hill and Greensands Way Underpasses were installed in October 2007, followed by the Canadian Memorial Underpass which was constructed in two phases between February and April 2008. The final structure, High Pitfold Underpass was installed in February 2009.

The project is located in an environmentally area that includes an SNCI woodland the Whealden Heaths SPA and the Devil’s Punchbowl SSSI.

The Underpasses have been designed to provide safe crossing places along the bypass for walkers, horse riders and cyclists and will significantly reduce the community severance caused by the existing trunk road.

The construction of a number of the structures affected the existing, heavily trafficked A3 Trunk Road and use of ABM’s Precast Concrete system has allowed Balfour Beatty to minimise the impact due to its off-site manufacture and rapid installation.

Working in close proximity to live traffic required Balfour Beatty to use extensive Temporary Traffic management systems which was designed and maintained in conjunction with ABM’s installation team.

Units for the Canadian Memorial Underpass had to be installed beneath and adjacent to an existing fibre optic cable. ABM developed a very detailed lifting plan and rigorous installation control methodology in order to ensure that no damage was caused to the cable. The clearance between the cable’s support frame and our units was 150mm.

ABM’s ability to plan the lift regime, design the special lifting beam configuration and comply with the stringent installation controls avoided the extensive programme delay and additional cost that diversion of the cable would have caused.
