Sisk Roadbridge Joint venture trading as SRB Civil Engineering Ltd signed a contract with Kilkenny County council for the construction of the N9/N10 Phase 4 Knocktopher to Powerstown high quality dual carriageway/motorway. The total scheme cost is €467 million and represents the largest project ever undertaken by Kilkenny County Council.
This contract is the final phase of the Kilcullen to Waterford motorway (one of five Major Inter Urbans) originally identified in the Government’s 2000 – 2006 National development Plan, reaffirmed in Transport 21 and the current National Development Plan, towards 2016. The completion date for the contract is 30th November 2010 which is in line with targets set in Transport 21.
Following succesful co-operation with ABM on several highway schemes, SRB Civil Engineering engaged ABM to design, fabricate and install five structures, three Opti-cadres and two Matiere arches on this project.
The two river structures S06 & S08 (Matiere arches) had to be completed by late august at the latest, to enable SRB to complete construction works in the river areas before the River Authorities deadline date of 30th September, in which construction works within rivers are prohibited from October 1st – March 30th.
These two structures were completed using fast track management in the planning and production process.
SRB CEL prepared the necessary river diversions, pad foundations and access roads to enable ABM installation crews to erect the structures in an efficient and timely manner to meet the demanding deadlines. Each structure was erected in 4-5 days including wingwalls. A 200 tonne crane was utilised for the erection process with mobile elevated work platforms to assist the 4 man erection crew.

The rail bridge RB01, which carries the rail line over a local farm road, is in close proximity of the main structure on this section, the bridge across the Maritca river. The bridge RB01 is replacing an old existing bridge at the end of its lifecycle which was confirmed by several borehole drills samples tested in a laboratory.
continueThe road bridge carries over a 2nd class road over a double rail electrified track. The existing bridge structure was a three span bridge of precast pre-stressed beams of the length 30m sitting on in-situ columns.
