ABM help restore Roman Roads!

01/07/2010

Road improvements are underway in Nottinghamshire with the recent commencement of a £220 million project by Balfour Beatty to convert a single carriageway to a dual two-lane road on 28km of the A46 between Newark and Widmerpool.

As a Roman road the existing A46 is generally straight, but follows the undulating landscape, giving forward visibility and overtaking problems. In addition, with nearly 300 direct private accesses, 19 “T” junctions and 9 at grade junctions, this section of the A46 has a higher than average accident record for roads of this type.

With such upgrading on or around the existing line, it is vital that the construction methodology will minimise disruption to the ongoing traffic requirements. Balfour Beatty have taken a pro-active approach in dealing with all stakeholders who will be affected by the works and have primarily focused on risk management in their assessment of construction solutions.

ABM were selected to provide a solution for one of two underbidges as the modular technology of our systems can offer value and assurance in cost and delivery certainty. Farandon underpass is located on proposed section of the existing line that is to be widened and will be constructed in two phases to maintain traffic flow. Thus, the necessity for rapid construction is paramount and the Opti Cadre solution, with precast concrete wingwalls and edge beams, will minimise the duration of road closures and accelerate the road resinstatement as each phase of the structure should be assembled in a matter of days.

ABM are currently manufacturing the elements for this bridge and plan to install in July and September of this year.

Once complete, the improvement scheme will provide eight grade-separated junctions, 11 overbridges and two underbridges, as well as realigning the junctions with A606 at the southern end of the scheme and the Newark Relief Road at the north.

They say Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were Roman roads. However, ABM will not take much longer than this in installing the critical sections of the Farandon underpass!
