Projects

Client: Irish Rail
Project: M1 Northern Motorway, Drogheda Bypass

ABM Bridge System’s involvement in this project was to construct a railway over-bridge and motorway under-bridge at Lagavoren, a rural area situated just outside Drogheda town.

Ours was an alternative design to the specimen design. It was specifically aimed at facilitating simpler and speedier on-site construction.

The location of the site posed a number of challenges: it was positioned over a railway line, which in turn was positioned on an embankment that needed to be supported. The specimen design would have required the use of extensive sheet piling, whereas the ABM Bridge Systems design solution offered our client a greater clear span. In addition, because we created the infrastructure for twin rail tracks, Irish Rail will have the option to install these tracks at some future date should they decide to do so.

Other technical features of this structure include mechanically stabilised spandrel walls, wing walls and precast parapets.

Skanska recently engaged ABM to fast-track installation works and obtain cost savings for a new railway bridge carrying a single-track railway from Štubňa to Prievidza over the new R3 expressway. The original proposal was based on an in-situ concrete abutment with a temporary steel bridge deck being used with a permanent deck of steel beams cast with a concrete infill. This involved long-term restrictions on traffic on the track and two full possessions.
