Client: Cork County Council
Project: M8 Glanmire to Watergrasshill, Co Cork
The construction of a 10 km stretch of the M8 Dual Carriageway from Glanmire to Watergrasshill was completed in September 2003 at a cost of €108 million. ABM Bridge Systems role in this project was to create a structure that would support the significant levels of fill beneath the M8 Dual Carriageway. Specifically, it required the installation of three precast arch culverts, which would be capable of supporting 18 metres of fill (in the case of the G9 culvert), and 10 metres of fill (in the case of the G10 culvert).
The arches, which carry a stream below the dual carriageway, made provision for a range of environmental infrastructure requirements stipulated by the EPA and the Office of Public Works including the creation of ledge access for small mammals and the construction of bat boxes.
ABM Bridge Systems completed these installations at the rate of one structure every three days – a very tight timeframe by any standards
The new intersection Stupava was opened to public on the first of August 2011. It is the crossing of the old D2 with the new constructed D4.
The rail bridge RB01, which carries the rail line over a local farm road, is in close proximity of the main structure on this section, the bridge across the Maritca river. The bridge RB01 is replacing an old existing bridge at the end of its lifecycle which was confirmed by several borehole drills samples tested in a laboratory.
continueThe road bridge carries over a 2nd class road over a double rail electrified track. The existing bridge structure was a three span bridge of precast pre-stressed beams of the length 30m sitting on in-situ columns.
