Located on the existing site of a derelict 19th Century British Army Barracks, ABM is currently undertaking enabling works in preparation for future refurbishment works which are planned for the historic barracks building.  The surrounding site boundary is formed with a natural embankment which stands less than 2m from the walls of the existing derelict barracks.

The enabling works include reinforcing the existing barrack walls which are in very poor structural condition and reinforcement of the embankments to ensure structural stability.  This project will also involve drainage works such as disposal of an existing land drain, new ground and surface water drainage installation.
ABM successfully tendered for this project and have recently commenced on-site, having devised efficient solutions to address the high risk problems that exist.  Issues associated with embankment stabilisation works, drainage works, construction of retaining walls to the embankment and underpinning of the existing barracks foundations all needed to be addressed prior to the commencement of any civil engineering works.  Site investigations have been carried out and construction work has commenced.

This project is being carried out on a live site in which an adjoining café and visitors centre will remain operational throughout the works.  Particular attention is being paid to the protection of both construction workers and the general public from falling debris. Site security measures are in place to prevent the general public from gaining access to the embankment site which will also undergo drainage and foundation excavations.  Removal of debris from the site such as trees, vegetation and general movement of site traffic during operational hours have all been addressed in a traffic management plan which will be continuously reviewed throughout the enabling works phase.
