Broad Gauge returns!

08/12/2009

The need to increase the rail gauge clearance to accommodate increased W10 size freight wagons recently led to the replacement of the traditional brick arch structure at Gipsy Lane in Nuneaton.

With rail closures only possible for weekend possessions, a fully pre-cast concrete solution was chosen. The ‘kit’ bridge comprised 8 cill beam elements, 13 TY internal and 2 TYE edge beams each with stringcourse and parapet units cast on. The whole structure was pre-erected (see photo) to ensure that the replacement could be erected over a single weekend.

Contractor, VolkerFitzpatrick successfully completed the demolition and replacement of the bridge over two consecutive weekends in October, 2009.
