Client: AMEC/Alstom/Scottish Power
Project: Longannet Power Station, Salt Water Flue Gas De-sulphurisation Project

A Stg170 million, three year project will install Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) at Longannet Power Station and will reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide SO2 by more than 90%.

ABM were contracted by AMEC Group Ltd, Industrial Division to manufacture and deliver to site near Kincardine in Scotland, over 80 complex and varied precast units weighing up to 42 tonnes each. In total nearly 2000 tonnes of concrete were delivered to site during the summer of 2007.

Many of the items were required for installation in the main cooling water channel of the power station, which involved a complete shut-down of all power generation by the station. The works within the cooling water channel were programmed to be undertaken during an immovable 15 day period in the construction programme due to long term power supply obligations on the client, Scottish Power plc.

The aggressive, hot, acidic, saline environment in which the units had to perform along with their complex nature led ABM Precast Solutions to use a special self-compacting, micro-silica based concrete mix.
