Client: Dyer & Butler, Southampton
Project: Tytherington Railway Bridge Replacement, Somerset

With strengthening not being a viable option for upgrading this overbridge, Network Rail chose a complete replacement. Limitation on railway possession and the need to maintain road access called for a complete precast solution to be selected.

A combination of interlocking prestressed box beams and reinforced concrete cill beams were supplied. To speed construction further, the containment parapets were precast on to the outer box beams. Whilst this resulted in units which required particular attention in manufacture, trial erection and transport, the need for over rail formwork and in-situ concrete placement was eliminated.

Limited access and poor weather made the delivery of the units to site difficult, but in late summer 2007 nine precast elements were successfully placed and the bridge re-opened to traffic on schedule.

A similar, but larger, skewed bridge was supplied later in the year to the same contractor for a bridge replacement at Sherbourne 20 miles away.
