Requirements

  • Install alongside a century old brick arch structure
  • Span the canal and tow-path
  • Keep canal open/live during construction works

Solution

  • Two different types of lower elements were designed to achieve to required skew of the original structure.
  • Specially devised construction methodology allowed the canal to remain open during construction.
  • The lower section of the Matière arch is buried in the earth to give the correct height to span ratio.

The Matiére system was originally developed in France for hydraulic structures in the 1980's, since then the system has been developed into a modular range of arch, box and portal frames for a wide range of transport and infrastucture applications. Indeed, some 10,000 structures already exsist worldwide exploiting soil structure interaction to minimise section sizes and allow rapid, cost effective on-site installation with precast units.
